Description
This is a nice, silver,
“Three Kreuzer”
from the
“Holy Roman Empire”
centered in Austria. It was struck at the Hall Mint in Tyrol, and dated 1685 during the reign of
“Holy Roman Emperor”,
Leopold I commonly called Leopold
“The Hogmouth”,
he ruled from 1658 until his death on May 5, 1705.
“The Hogmouth”:
Leopold had the misfortune to manifest perhaps the most extreme example of the Habsburg family trait of an enlarged lower lip. He insisted on being accurately portrayed as can be clearly seen on this coin. It is doubtful that anyone ever had the temerity to call him that to his face, but the derogatory epithet has come down to history, mostly I suspect, because of his image on the coins.

The Catholic, King James II comes to the throne of Protestant Britain after his brother Charles II dies. This sets the stage for the
“Glorius Revolution”
of 1688 when William & Mary chase her father off the throne and into French exile. And, Louis XIV of France canceled the
“Edict of Nantes”
in 1685, ending the rights of French Huguenots or Protestants.
