Wampum is often confused as a form of currency. However this is not so, Wampum to the Eastern tribes is as a Chanupa (sacred pipe) is to the plains people. They are made from the quahog shell and sadly many of the original wampum treaty belts have been stolen while others have been returned to the tribes.
Authentic wampum is to be treated as if creator was in your presence. It told stories and lessons for the tribes from which they originate. It was a symbol of friendship and respect honesty and promise.
