Description
This is a Pliocene age (approx. 5 mya) fossil whelk from the famous Rucks' Pit site in Fort Drum, Florida. During the fossilization process, the calcium carbonate from the original shell material dissolved and recrystalized as calcite. The exterior of the shell is encrusted with the coquina from which it was removed. The Ruck’s Pit site is also famous for its fossil clams, which are very common, but fossil whelks, such as this one, are more rare. The size of this specimen is 94 x 78 x 51 mm, and it weighs 121 grams.By request, I will combine shipping on multiple items and for multiple winning bids within 7 days.
