My original listing described this as a salesman's sample, circa 1920-1940. A sharp-eyed and kind fellow eBayer pointed out I was mistaken. Here is new info as given:
blueridge-usa: "Thought you would like to know--------------
Just some information about your Lane cedar chest. These were not salesmen samples. These minature chests were part of an annual promotion that Lane did called the "Girl Graduate Program." These chests were sold to & branded with the name of a local furniture dealer.
The dealer and the Lane salesman would obtain the names and addresses of the senior High School girls who were graduating from HS. (Can you imagine now it would be impossible to obtain the names and addresses of the girl seniors.---Just different time.) Then Lane would mail out an invitation from the dealer inviting the girls to stop by the furniture store to pickup their GIFT.
During the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, many girls never went to college and married shortly after HS graduation. So right after marriage, they would be buying furniture and hopefully visit the dealer that gave them the Gift."
I worked for Lane in the early 1970s, so I know the company and history very well.
BUZZYMOTHER: "WOW! Thanks so much for the information. I had been told “sample” years back and thought it was fact. Can I quote you on my listing? Thanks again. That was generous."
blueridge-usa: "Yes..............happy for you to quote me.................Your chest is very rare as you can see later designs did not have the flutted
columns or the wooden feet................As the volume of these increased, Lane look for ways to reduce the costs of manufacture.
As the dealers bought these to give away.............."
