    Description

McKEESPORT, Pa. (AP) _ A parasite found in the water system has prompted a boil-water advisory for about 40,000 residents here and in three neighboring Pittsburgh communities, health officials said.
The order was imposed for McKeesport, Port Vue, Versailles and White Oak after giardia cysts were found in the McKeesport Water Authority system.
The parasite, which has been traced to raw sewage, can produce giardiasis, a painful intestinal disease with symptoms that include vomiting and diarrhea.
When giardia infiltrated the McKeesport system, some residents had to boil their drinking water or rely on bottled supplies for almost four months. During that outbreak, 344 cases of giardiasis were confirmed in Youghiogheny River communities.
THIS HAPPENED IN JANUARY 1984. MEASURES 4 1/2" TALL.
