Description
Catlinite Smudge BowlThe quarries at Pipestone, Minnesota are the only place where Catlinite is found. This soft red stone has been quarried for centuries by native people. The trade routes were extensive. Evidence of this has been found throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. The quarries are still in use and are considered sacred by native people. With the coming of the fur trappers the Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company both realized the importance of the stone as they often saw it in use. They both began producing metal smokable trade axes in a variety of styles fashioning them and a wide variety of other items after the catlinite hand carved pieces they had seen and used.
Since is hand-made, they differ in dimensions, size and design. Every smudge bowl is one of a kind representing the style of the artist and general appearance of the design. The sizes and details vary between each unique smudge bowl and artist and with the catlinite.
The smudge bowl is approximately a 2 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches bowl x 3/4 inch excluding the height of the arrowhead. The hand carved and designed arrowhead features etched feather drops and is about 7/8 inch x 5/8 inch x 1/8 inch. The bowl is about 1 3/4 inches across x 1/2 inch deep. The bottom side of the smudge bowl has black felt. Especially made to easily carry in your pocket. These make wonderful, easily mailable pieces of authentic Native American art to give or to collect. Each is crafted by Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux artist Betty Tellinghuisen.
