Description
For the Active Stereo 3d PhotographerTwin camera bottom-to-bottom KIT for Stereo 3d Photography
NOTE
: This kit is useful for cameras that have the tripod screw at the center of the lens so they can be placed bottom-to-bottom with perfect alignment without needing any offset.
Examples of cameras I have experience with: Most Panasonic GF and GX series. For example GF1, GX1, GX7, etc. Also, most Samsung NX cameras. And Canon cameras. And Sony RX0 (original or ii)
The main advantage of putting the cameras bottom-to-bottom (vs. side by side) is to bring the lenses closer together and avoid the hyperstereo effect. The disadvantage is that your pictures have a portrait format. This is good for portraits and not so good for landscapes, etc. But with some cropping you can get good results in many situations.
You are getting the following in this kit:
Three screws:
- 1/4x20 screw, 5/8" length, metal
- 1/4x20 screw, 1/2" length, metal
- 1/4x20 screw, 3/4" length, plastic
Plus a pair of 35mm friction pads
To attach the cameras, follow these steps:
1. Prepare one screw by putting the two friction pads as shown in the pictures
2. Screw one end to one camera
3. Screw the second camera by turning it over the part of the screw that comes out of the first camera. Keep turning until the cameras are aligned.
With the Panasonic GX1 cameras a slight pressure is needed for the cameras to get aligned. The pressure is taken up by the soft friction pads.
The final result looks as it shown in a picture
(showing my Panasonic GX1 with wired remotes and a pair of Olympus 60mm macro lenses):
A Tip:
If you are taking close-ups like portraits, I found that a slight convergence helps put a better stereo window and avoid image loss. I found out that using a rubber band helps keep the lenses at a slight convergence.
Please do not over-do it with this or you might damage the screw or the mounting holes of the cameras or the mounting of the lenses!
The setup shown in the pictures has a distance between the lenses of 2 3/4" or 70mm
Here is an example of a picture of my cat (in LRL format) that I took in the first day I experimented with this
I then cropped the picture a bit and found out that I preferred this B&W version
