Needless to say this was a real big to-do back 1902 but not much is known about this event now. Sponsored  by the Elk's Club (B.P.O.E.) but certain nights festivities were sponsored by other groups like Woodmen of the World, Highbinders of America, Knights of Pythias, Native Sons, and others. The week long event must've been put together to promote Oakland and the other communities in Alameda and nearby counties as they are all featured in this book and their qualities assessed. It is a fascinating look into the civic pride of Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area at the turn of the Century before the earthquake changed everything.
"GRAND FIREWORKS And MOCK IMITATION !!  CHINESE THEATRE on FREE PLATFORM !!"
    "ELK's HORRIBLES PARADE !  PROMENADE CONCERT !"
Various military drills and musical programs. and on the last night..."CARNIVAL NIGHT  EVERYBODY  "EN MASQUE." "
One of the more interesting aspects to this are the many advertisements for long ago defunct local businesses. One of the reasons this particular guide book was saved was that the original owner of it had his own advertisement in it for a Bicycle store and repair shop for PIERCE CYCLES "Tried and True" with and image  of Frank L. Kramer on a Pierce Racer, National Champion of 1901. there are nifty ads for Wine Rooms, Bars, Clothiers, Real Estate, Restaurants, ice Cream shops,Sherman , Clay & co. piano, Opticians, Tobacconists,  Grocery Stores, Cigar Dealers,  Wineries, Hotels, Vaudeville theatres ( "New Moving Pictures"), Rainer Beer, Wieland's and Fredericksburg Lager Beer, H.C. Capwell Co.'s The Lace  House, Lucky Strike, Coffee and Tea Co.s, Warren's Rye and Bourbon whiskies,Meat Markets, and Furniture stores,Piedmont Sulphur Springs,Guns & Sporting goods stores, Brunswick Balke Collender Billiard and Pool Tables,  This rare guide book will be excellent primary source material for the historian or scholar or a wonderful piece of ephemera for the collector or enthusiast of this great era for Expositions and Fairs.
